Brett began attending OWA programs as a participant in 1996. He has completed two years in the OWA leadership development program and has become an integral member of the OWA staff. A native of Winnetka, Brett currently attends the University of Vermont where he allegedly finds some time to study between climbing outings and bike races. He spent the fall 03 semester studying in New Zealand where he also found a little time to explore the adventure opps there. He is a Wilderness First Responder, a certified AMGA Top Rope Site Manager and does a bit of competetive climbing. He has solid alpine experience including serving as a rope team leader during the OWA 2002 Ancohuma Expedition and has worked in all areas of the OWA program. He's also the son of OWA Guide Peter Merlin.
